Bentley the Spaniel Guy knew something was up before we even got in the car. Sensing that we were preparing to leave, he ran into his kennel expecting his usual treat, but was confused when we put on his leash and led him to a neighbor’s house for a play date. It was entirely appropriate, though. Bentley spent the day with his Shepard friend Shiner while we spent the day driving to Shiner.

The morning was cool, but the overcast skies showed promise of clearing, so we lowered the hood on the MG and headed off to the rendezvous point at the Valero station – and found our first surprise. Sometime in the two years since we met there for our Spring Drive to Brenham, the Valero had transformed into a Circle K. This transformation seemed to be news to Google, too, for they still called it a Valero. Fortunately, everyone participating in the drive soon figured it out, and our band of five MGs and two lesser vehicles headed out shortly after 9:00.

Our first destination was Rockne Groceries on the far side of Brenham, where we met up with members of the Alamo MG Club. Our second surprise of the trip was doubling the size of our entourage, because San Antonia showed up with seven MGs, including an MGC and a more modern MGF. And our timing was impeccable, because we showed up mere minutes after they arrived. After some chatting, gassing and munching, we headed out to our second stop, the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hallettsville.

St. Mary’s is one of the Texas “painted churches”, established in the 1800s by Czech and other eastern European immigrants. Imagine our surprise when we pulled up to this small country church and found the parking area packed with vehicles on a Saturday morning! We subsequently found out that the church had been filled with mourners attending a funeral mass, so we debated the propriety of our group touring the church. Fortunately, one of the parishioners let us know that the services had concluded, the church was empty, and we were welcome to look around. We thanked her for her kindness and completed our brief visit to this comfortable and beautiful historic church.

We soon departed for the final leg of our journey to the K. Spoetzl Brewery and Distillery in Shiner, a short 15 minutes down the road. When we arrived, we were pleased that the brewery had reserved parking for out group in the employee lot, which is covered with sunshades. We were able to park all our MGs together, and we were shortly joined by more than a dozen cars from the Houston MG Club, completing our reunion of the three car clubs. After a beautiful morning drive, it was time to take photos and have a natter with friends!

We were fortunate that our visit coincided with the grand opening of their new Rickhouse Restaurant, containing both a cocktail bar featuring drinks made with their new line of spirits, and a restaurant serving a full range of lunch and dinner items. We were able to find tables inside to swap stories, enjoy a beverage, have a nosh, and watch football on the giant TV screens. Others in our group enjoyed a tour of the brewery, sampled the BBQ restaurant, or enjoyed one of their many varieties of beer not widely found for sale. We were also able to enjoy live music in the covered beer garden.

All agreed it was a great drive on what turned out to be a perfect warm Fall day. As we departed to make our way home, we looked forward to returning to Shiner next year. Maybe next year we will give Bentley his choice of Shiners to visit!

What do a bunch of little British car owners do to celebrate Oktoberfest?  They go to the pub.  On a recent somewhat cool evening, perfect for a top down drive, several little British car owners made the trek to the Kenney Fort Pub in Round Rock for some socialization, some fish and chips, and a few British brews.

Here are few photos of the fun evening.  Hope more British car enthusiasts can join us at our next outing.

This past Saturday we enjoyed a pleasant gathering at the Potters' garage in Elgin with a bonus visit to the Wros's garage. Everyone enjoyed Gary's cars, and admired the 48 MG-TC and 31 Chevy he's added to his fleet since last time we visited. We enjoyed coffee, donut holes, and homemade biscotti and scones, then wandered down the path to Ed's garage as well.

Following the devastating central Texas flooding in early July, club members rallied to help with relief efforts. At our July meeting, we assembled hygiene bags and collected towels and blankets to go to a Williamson County church ministering to flood victims along Sandy Creek.

In addition, the club voted to assist Mrs. Bates, Mom to club member Anthony Loomis, whose home was one of several swept away along Sandy Creek in the Nameless Road area. Club members made individual donations and the club also donated from our treasury to present Mrs. Bates with $2,170 to help with stabilizing and rebuilding their garage. She is grateful to now have a secure area for storage while she determines next steps.

A big shout out goes to club members Danny Zeier, who has been actively helping with the rebuilding effort, and Christy Zeier, who did a wonderful job coordinating our relief efforts.

Here are a few progress photos, so you can see what your generosity has helped to accomplish.

A good crowd got together for a tour of the gardens and garage of Will Evans and Liz Cook. Will proudly showed his varous projects and entertained us all  Liz provided refreshments while we basked in the June sunshine on the patio. The group adjourned to Camp Brightside following the tour for lunch and more conversation.

Saturday, April 26th, Eric Van Note and Bruce Whiteside planned a nice drive in the Hill Country to Burnet, via FM 1431, Cow Creek Road, and Park Road 4.  We had an 8-car caravan of MGs, and Andy Hempel drove his Mazda Miata convertible.  Twelve members met for the drive, and Nick Roccaforte joined us for lunch when we stopped at Bill’s Burgers in Burnet.  Their outdoor patio area was a great place to chow down on their huge burgers, fries, and onion rings, and a perfect place for Bentley to take a snooze under the table!

FUN FACT: Our drivers included two members who are the original owners of their MGs!

John Chrisler bought his 73 MGB-GT off the showroom floor!

Doug Breneman is also the original owner of his 72 MGB.

About 35 club members and their families gathered at Champion Park in Cedar Park for an enjoyable picnic lunch on Saturday. Doug Breneman and Rick South flipped burgers, while Nancy Breneman, Karla Vining, Liz Cook, Carrie South, Joe Vining, Eric Van Note, and Bev Van Note all pitched in to help in various capacities. Thanks to everyone for their efforts and to all attendees!

To the best of my knowledge, there were five MGs in the parking lot: the Zeiers' TF, Eric's TD, and the Brenemans', Whitesides', and Souths' MGBs. Forgive me if I overlooked anyone!

Joe Vining interspersed calling out numbers for various door prizes with a short business meeting. The big news is that we have a full slate of officers for the coming year! Bev  Van Note will serve as president; Rick South volunteered as vice-president; and Denise Whiteside and Scott Hardy will reprise their roles as secretary and treasurer, respectively. Karla Vining will take over Bev's previous duties on web site content,  keeping newsletter articles coming your way!

On Saturday March 22, the Sweet Rides Car Show was held at the First United Methodist Church in Round Rock. All cars were welcome, and they were divided into 5 classes judged by both spectators and participants: hot rods, muscle cars, early & late classics, and sports/exotics.  On a whim, Joe Vining and I decided to attend, so there were 2 MG’s entered, my 51 MG-TD and Joe’s 61 MGA. The show was great, and we met lots of nice folks. One award was presented for each class, and CCMGC’s very own Mr. Vining won the Sports/Exotic class!

So does this mean Joe has the sweetest ride in the club? You’ll have to attend this free show next spring to find out!

We had a great turnout for our drive to Dripping Springs on March 1. Nothing was dripping except maybe a little oil here and there! The weather was gorgeous as 19 attendees in 11 vehicles, including 7 MGBs and 1 TC, made a circuit from Bee Caves to Dripping Springs to Wimberley to Driftwood. One family from PA who recently purchased an MG back home even took time out from their vacation to join us in a rental vehicle.

Unfortunately, just as we were making the last turn toward our mouth-watering destination--Salt Lick BBQ--we were foiled by a road closure due to a gravel truck accident. With a few quick recalculations on Trish's part, the remaining intrepid travelers detoured to Mandola's instead.
